Indications
Approved for mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and maintenance of remission in adults intolerant of sulfasalazine.
How it works
Helps reduce inflammation (swelling).
Drug interactions
Aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen.
Pre-treatment screening tests
Blood tests, kidney and liver tests, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine in the past 6 weeks, and skin tests.
Tests during screening
Blood, kidney, and liver tests.
Route of administration
Frequency
2 or 3 times a day
Side effects
Diarrhea (loose stools), headache, nausea, upset stomach or throwing up, abdominal (stomach) pain, cramping, not feeling hungry, rash, and fever.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to olsalazine, aminosalicylates, salicylates, or metabolites or any component of the formulation.
Safety information
Signs of allergic reaction, like face swelling, fainting, dizziness, hives, shortness of breath, signs of kidney problems, blood in the urine, chest pain, swollen glands, signs of liver problems, fever, red, blistered skin.
